Yesterday I was entered in the CASI Freighthouse Chili Cookoff. This was my first chili cookoff, besides Ken's chili cooking class, both being alot of fun! For running late and being this was my first chili cookoff I proudly walked away with 7th place in Red Chili, out of 19 great chili cooking teams! BIG SPECIAL CONGRATS TO...Russ who took 1st Place in Green Chili and Anthony who took 1st Place in Red Chili!!! Congrats to Tom on 2nd Place in Red, and any others in this forum that I might have missed. Special Thanks to Ken "Sarge" and all the others teams out there that made this a fun event!!!

St Patrick's Red and Green CCO

I want to thank all those wonderful people who came out to cook and judge at the St Patrick's Red and Green CCO yesterday at the Freighthouse Square. Also a big Thank You to my friends Phil and Kathy and Jerry and his wife who came and bought tickets to sample the chili. Because of all of these wonderful people we made about $1700 for the My Sister Pantry - Tacoma Food Bank (a little over the $350 we made last year when they didn't advertise the event).

Anthony James won the CASI red event and Russ Kellogg won the green chili event. We had 19 cooks. Special congratulations to Tom Rowe, new cook who placed 2nd in CASI and Pam Brown, also new cook who placed 4th CASI both drove all the way up from Astoria, Oregon to attend our event. Thank you.

And I was proud because one of the people who took my chili cooking class last December at Rick Naug's house, Dave Kronbeck took 7th place. Congratulations and thank you.

Also I want to thank the 10 judges: Larry Miller, John Houser, Ben Isitt (FHS judge selection), Rick Naug, Johnnie Greer, Bob and Amy Nordness, Chuck Senn and Kim, and best of all Kevin the Busman from Country radio Q 102.9 KNBQ.

Now, the sad news is I had so much to do (boo hoo) that I forgot to take any pictures. So please, please all you wonderful people who did take pictures send them or some to me. It doesn't matter if they are of indivuals or people you don't know those are the best kind. I would appreciate if I could get them next week by Wed so I can put some of them in the newsletter. I thank you very much for your consideration.

Now, want to know who placed where? Check out the website www.pugetpodcasi.us and the entire list will be there if our great, famous WebMaster Dennis will put it up soon. (Dennis it is being mailed right after this.)

We wish everyone good luck and good health for the rest of the year and remember - it takes 15 cooks to make a sanction so please go to as many as you can to help out the promoters. We are a scarce commodity and getting scarcer all the time. Which means please check out the website for upcomings you want to attend.

Hey Chili Heads,

I saw Mexene chili powder on the tolbert website - anyone have any experience with this company ?? Is this good stuff ?

I am partial to wick fowler mix - make my own from recipes on the web. I just kinda throw stuff in the pot anymore. Just made some chili last night.

BTW
smoked beef brisket and smoked pork butt make delicious chili.

Oh Yeah - come to Beaverton on the 28th for our legion CCO - I promise a good time. The legion will have available inexpensive breakfast, lunch and COLD BEER - thats right - I said COLD BEER.

Update For Saint Patrick’s Day Chili Cook Off

Well we are one day away from the cookoff and things are going smoothly. I would just like to remind everyone that we would like for you to be at the Freighthouse Square by 0900 so we can have a Cook's Meeting before the Health Dept Inspector arrives. For those who don't know the FHS is on 25th and D St right near the Tacoma Dome. If you come from Pacific Ave the best way would be to come East down 26th St and then go to D St and turn left. The FHS is on your right but before you get to it there is a ramp at the rear of the FHS that we want you to drive upon and come down to Door 9 or almost to the end where you go off. My son, Michael and/or I will be there with a cart to help you unload. You can then drive down the ramp, turn left and on the right hand side of 25th St will be a parking garage. It is free parking unless you park in a reserved parking space. Come back to the rear of the FHS in the Rainier Room and we will tell you where you can set up. The Health Department is allowing the non-holders of Food Hander Permits to give out samples but we must put a FHP holder on each side of them. So, rather than you trying to find a place we will find it for you. Also, if you don't want to give out samples then be sure to tell us so we can put you in a far away place. The sampling is $5 for all they can sample and that means with 25 cooks that would be 50 oz's for only $5. The sampling cups are 2 1/2 oz and you fill them 3/4 quarters up. We furnish cups, spoons and napkins.

We will have the Hand Washing Stations set up at the back of the U shape will be in. Also, sitting on the floor will be two (2) bleach buckets (Pierce County is the only one who requires this arrangement); The Red bucket is for utensils and wiping the cutting board for raw meat; and, the green bucket is for utensils used for vegetables. I know, they said no cutting but if you arrive early enough you can. Even though they said no cutting they said I have to have these buckets so I will have them. We need to do what they say and everything will go nicely. Answer the Inspectors' questions but do NOT volunteer any information. And here is what you say: You bought the meat at the grocery/meat market (keep the sales tags that are on top of the package so you can show them if they ask) and it was cutup for you by them. The vegetables are the same thing. They were bought already cutup in packages. It is nice what they do for the consumer these days.

I know we will have a great time with lots of fun. We wish you a safe and uneventful trip there and back home. And good luck. Remember: The primary purpose for coming to this event is to raise money for the local charity (My Sister's Pantry - a Tacoma Food bank); promote the great American food chili; and have FUN!

Hi Tom,
Sure glad you could not pass this group up. The Chili Group needs chili head experts like yourself. Myself I don’t know much at all about competition style chili, but hope to know more after this weekends CCO in Tacoma.
