Montana State Barbecue Championship "Smokin' in the 'Root"

For those of you that have not attended in previous years, the 8th Annual Montana State Barbecue Championship - "Smokin' in the 'Root" - occurs in conjunction with the Bitterroot Valley's largest community event, the Creamery Picnic. This year is the 98th year and will be held on August 6th and 7th in Stevensville, which is located approximately 30 miles south of Missoula. Events planned at this year's family friendly Picnic will include a kids' parade, car show, 1 mile, 5K and 10K fun runs, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, a grand parade, brew fest, ice cream garden, live entertainment Friday night and all day Saturday, an all-valley teen dance on Saturday night, kids games all day Saturday, and of course the BBQ competition. The BBQ competition is one of the main events of the weekend and the locals look forward to eating the amazing, mouthwatering BBQ.

One of the biggest advantages to this competition is that you are able to sell your BBQ to the public, much like another vendors that attend the Picnic. This helps you recoup some of your travel expenses incurred getting to, and competing in, the competition. During the last four years, there was approximately $20,000 worth of BBQ sold at the event each year!!
